Gardens & Grounds

Exquisite intimate garden rooms planted and designed to echo the history of Pauntley Court.

The stunning and very magical gardens at Pauntley Court were planted by Melissa’s mother in the mid 1990’s.  They form a beautiful backdrop and frame to the house and echo and reflect the many different periods of the building.

The Sunken Garden, with its ornamental pond and neat and intricate box hedges with the four Medlar trees in each corner, was created as this is in front of the Elizabethan wing that we call ‘Elinor Fettiplace’.

The Quince Orchard is a wonderful and intimate space to have your civil ceremony or just sit in the dappled shade on a hot and sunny day.  The golden pear like fruit is picked in the Autumn and given to Gun Dog Gin to make the Quince Gin so much enjoyed by many a couple and their guests.

The Hornbeam Arches frame the garden rooms and create a structure which is beautiful at any time of the year with views from here down to the lake and the River Leadon valley beyond.

The Ruin Garden formed by yew hedges is planted on the foundations of what was to be ‘Great House of Stone’ that the Somerset family were to build in the 17th century but as the King became Protestant and they were Catholic, they fled to France!

We now have a Petanque Court amongst the yew hedges and there is a tennis court too as well as a croquet set which is perfect on a summer’s afternoon.

The flower beds around the house are consistently added to by Melissa’s mother, Christine, who you will often see out gardening with her two black Labradors beside her!
